Beta Gamma Sigma Information Session & LinkedIn – A Professional Enrichment Event – Fall 2014

Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) WPU Chapter hosted their first event this Fall semester and it was a hit! The semi-annual Professional Enrichment Information Session and LinkedIn event, held Thursday October 16th, brought in over 60 ambitious business students; all eager to learn about what William Paterson’s BGS Chapter has to offer. The students enjoyed pizza and soda as I presented the meaning of being inducted into the Society, the high recognition achieved through membership, and the endless benefits and opportunities offered by the organization. In addition, I discussed the importance of properly and professionally using LinkedIn as a career enhancement tool, explaining the Dos and Don’ts of the website. Students received BGS gifts and three students were fortunate enough to win a complementary induction fee raffle, valued at $67. Over all, the PE Information Session and LinkedIn event turned out to be a great success!

Beta Gamma Sigma Information Table – Fall 2014

On October 9th, the Vice Presidents of the William Paterson University Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) Honor Society enjoyed two hours of promoting the chapter’s upcoming Professional Enrichment Information Session and LinkedIn event. The four VPs set up an information table early that morning at the front doors of the Cotsakos College of Business and were ready to welcome business students and explain the many perks of being a prestigious BGS member. The VPs informed students about the importance of attending the Information Session and LinkedIn event, which was held on October 16th, where they learned about the many benefits of being a BGS member, how membership is a reflection of high academic excellence, and how to properly use LinkedIn in the business word. Students enthusiastically gathered around the table as the VPs gave testimonials of how the society helped them to enhance their careers and build their resumes.

Additional topics discussed included elevator speeches, how to utilize Twitter professionally, and LinkedIn vs. Facebook. Students were given three opportunities to win $200-$250 gift cards. Beta Gamma Sigma Event

Beta Gamma Sigma is an honor society serving business programs accredited by AACSB International (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business). Since it was established in 1913, Beta Gamma Sigma has inducted more than 700,000 outstanding students into membership in more than 500 collegiate chapters in all 50 U.S. states and 22 countries. Additionally, 27 alumni chapters serve the needs of alumni members in major metropolitan areas.

Our college is an established Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma since 2007. Science then we inducted more than 260 business students. Each spring semester I organize the annual Induction and Awards Dinner for our college. I extend invitations to seniors and juniors whose GPA places them at the top 10% and MBA students whose GPA places them at the top 20% of their cohorts. This year we inducted more than 70% of the invited students, which will entitles our college to be nominated as an Exemplary Chapter.

Since last year we started a tradition of inducting eligible faculty members into Beta Gamma Sigma. Last year I was inducted and this year our Interim Dean and the MBA director were inducted. Last year we also began to extend Chapter Honorees to our keynote speakers. We conclude the event by giving excellence awards to outstanding students.

This event takes all spring semester to organize but students appreciate it immensely. Our president, provost, and many faculty members attend it providing a chance for student-faculty informal interaction. Students are allowed to bring guests who witness their accomplishments at the dinner. Last year about 140 people attended this event and this year we grew to 200 attendees (45% growth rate).

To help me organize this event, I offer students the opportunity to become involved as Vice Presidents. This year we awarded these students with bronze medallions for their hard work and dedication to our chapter.

It is always a great pleasure for me to experience the celebratory nature of this event. I believe that students cherish this experience long after they graduate.
