BGS Meet the Leaders of Business Speaker Series – November 6th, 2014 Sponsored by WPU Chapter

2015/01/img_1787.jpg

Once again this semester, Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) hosted a successful and inspiring Professional Enrichment event! The BGS chapter of William Paterson University (WPU) was a proud participant in the 2014-2015 Meet the Leaders of Business (MLOB) Speaker Series on Thursday, November 6th, 2014. The MLOB program offers direct perspectives of prominent business professionals speaking on a variety of relevant topics.

The President of William Paterson University, Kathleen Waldron, in her communication to the university community stated:
“Patricia Powell ’73, 2013 Distinguished Alumna Legacy Awardee and a Foundation Board member, was chosen by Beta Gamma Sigma as one of the speakers for its Meet the Leaders of Business Speakers Series. Beta Gamma Sigma recognizes the importance of letting the best in business learn from the best of business and launched this special speaker series program, featuring prominent business professionals. Pat is the founder and president of The Powell Financial Group, and an adjunct faculty member in financial planning at William Paterson.  She was the guest speaker on the November 6 program at William Paterson that was aired live via webcast. The program was very well received by the students and participants and we are grateful to Pat for sharing her expertise and insight with our students.”

Ms. Powell spoke of how she reinvented herself throughout her career. Being a Mathematics and Education major, her first job was a bank teller. But she succeeded to climb up the corporate ladder and become a successful business professional. Despite the obstacles Ms. Powell faced as a woman trying to make it in an industry dominated by men, she never stopped chasing her dream job, until she reached it and more. Ms. Powell’s words, “Never say no to an opportunity”, echoed throughout her presentation; advice she lived by throughout her career. She was, and continues to be, open to new experiences and opportunities, which opened one door after another in her rise to success. Ms. Powell inspired all students in the audience, especially financial planning majors, to tackle the business world with confidence.

Beta Gamma Sigma Information Table – Fall 2014

On October 9th, the Vice Presidents of the William Paterson University Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) Honor Society enjoyed two hours of promoting the chapter’s upcoming Professional Enrichment Information Session and LinkedIn event. The four VPs set up an information table early that morning at the front doors of the Cotsakos College of Business and were ready to welcome business students and explain the many perks of being a prestigious BGS member. The VPs informed students about the importance of attending the Information Session and LinkedIn event, which was held on October 16th, where they learned about the many benefits of being a BGS member, how membership is a reflection of high academic excellence, and how to properly use LinkedIn in the business word. Students enthusiastically gathered around the table as the VPs gave testimonials of how the society helped them to enhance their careers and build their resumes.

Beta Gamma Sigma Information Session Spring 2014

Beta Gamma Sigma has again hosted its semi-annual Cotsakos College of Business professional enrichment event on March 11, 2014. The primary objective was to emphasize the benefits of joining the William Paterson Beta Gamma Sigma Chapter and the importance of utilizing LinkedIn as a professional networking tool.

Many students attended the session to learn more about joining Beta Gamma Sigma. Attendees were informed that being part of the prestigious honor society is not only something to put on a resume but it is also beneficial when establishing a network of high- achieving professionals. Students who attended the session learned that it is a significant achievement to be inducted into the society.

During the second half of the event, students learned about the ever-growing significance establishing a carefully selected network on LinkedIn and utilizing it to its maximum capability. Frequent preservation and use of one’s LinkedIn can give him or her the extra edge in the competitive professional world because it is becoming increasingly common for potential employers to review your profile prior to hiring you. LinkedIn profiles should be designed to give a snapshot of who you as a professional and they should differentiate you from the rest of the candidates.

If you missed the event and are interested in knowing more on the proceeding subjects, a professional event on similar topics is scheduled to be held during the fall semester. The date, time and location of the fall event have not been determined yet.

iBooks Author – Part 1

20130714-153057.jpg

I require my students to do group projects in my marketing management course and I have been posting Word and PowerPoint documents on Blackboard with instructions and material related to the project every semester. My project has three parts where students work on a different part of the project at a different time during the semester so they don’t need to do all the requirements of the project at the end of the semester. Therefore, I have a significant amount of material that I prepared for this project and which I post throughout the semester.

This week I decided to create an iBook for my project using iBooks Author app on my Mac. I wanted to have all the material in one place and be able to show everything on my iPad when I teach in class. Also, those who have iPads, iPhones, and Macs (with the upcoming OS) will be able to access my iBook through iBooks app. Those that do not have Apple devices will be able to open my iBook as a PDF file.

I was surprised how easy it was to start an iBook on iBooks Author especially as I had all my material already created in Word and PowerPoint documents. So basically I copied and pasted most of it. One feature I really like in iBooks Author app is the interactive images widget. It gives me the opportunity to post and example and explain different parts of it.

I downloaded two free iBooks explaining how to use iBooks Author app and I also watched an hour long webinar I found on YouTube. But I really could do most of the work in iBooks Author app without learning all the details. I believe that having a Mac and working on iWork files was helpful because many of the features in iBooks Author are similar to those in Pages.

I was inspired to start this iBook when I saw a video about a high school teacher that created an iBook for her class and because all students in that school receive iPads, they could use her iBook during class activities.

I am not sure how the students in my classes will respond to this but I am actually having a lot of fun creating this iBook. Please shear your experiences if you used iBooks Author app.

Evernote integrated into Dolphin Browser

20130604-135619.jpg

20130604-135626.jpg

I like to use Evernote on my iPad. It is a great app to organize notes into notebooks and I like the fact that all notes sync with my iPhone and my MacBook Pro. I use Evernote for private and school purposes. It is great to be able to have everything in one place but in different sections (notebooks). I used before other apps to organize my notes but once I migrated to Evernote I decided to stay with it.

One great thing about Evernote is its integration with other applications. I believe that this is what makes it so strong as an app. It integrates with DropBox for instance which lets you save notes in DropBox folders. I don’t use this integration much as I have access to Evernote from all my devices.

One integration I use very frequently is saving websites from Dolphin to Evernote. Dolphin is a free browser app. For example, when I find information on a Safari website that I would like to keep in Evernote I need to copy and paste the link into a new note in Evernote but then the website information does not show up on the note page, only the link does. If I open the website on Dolphin and save the link to Evernote (from Dolphin I can save the link to Evernote without opening Evernote), I can see the webpage information in Evernote.

Because Evernote recognizes phones and addresses, I can save a website page with a phone number and call the place from my iPhone when I open Evernote.

During my last vacation I saved many pages in Evernote and had access to the addresses and phones of locations on my iPhone and iPad. I used my Apple GPS on my iPad to get to locations when I clicked on their address in Evernote. It made our lives so much easier.

It also serves me when I plan my trip to a conference. I have all the phone numbers and addresses I need in one place when I save the web page of the conference through Dolphin.

On my laptop I can clip the Internet webpages on Safari and Firefox into Evernote directly but on my iPad I need to use Dolphin to do so.

I hope you’ll try this integration and enjoy the outcomes.
